One day, after finishing his business in the market, Nasreddine didn't find his donkey where he'd left it tied to a tree. The reason the donkey wasn't there was simply that three men had just stolen it with the intention of selling it in a neighbouring town. Very calmly, Nasreddine Hodja climbed up on a nearby terrace and started to shout so everyone could hear him: "Give me back my donkey, otherwise I'll do exactly what my father did when someone stole his donkey!"
People gathered around, asking each other nervously, "Does anyone know what Nasreddine's father did? Does anyone remember what happened?" and so on, but no one could remember having heard anything about the incident. Word of Nasreddine's threat travelled quickly and the thieves heard of it. Worriedly, they asked each other :
"Do you know what Nasreddine's father did? " "No!" "And you?" "Me neither!" "In that case, it's better not to run any risks. We'd best give him back his donkey."
The three thieves returned to the marketplace, feeling foolish and gave Nasreddine back his donkey: "Sorry, Nasreddine, we only wanted to play a joke on you." With great dignity, Nasreddine took the reins of his donkey and prepared to go home. As he was about to leave, someone finally dared to ask him the question that they all wanted to know the answer to: "So, Nasreddine, what exactly did your father do the day someone stole his donkey?"
