Here's a trick when all else fails... If you're using an external SoundCard / Audio Interface (highly advisable to get the best sound out of the most basic laptop; try the Behinger UCA222 which costs peanuts & delivers real goods) then stick a line in the headphone socket and root it into the inputs. All you need is mini-jack to double phono lead.
