As a youngster I never heard of putting anything on watermelon, but exposure to the Southern (US) branch of the family brought the salt practice in. I'll do it both ways now as the whim strikes. Seems like the salt is better when it's brutally hot; maybe there's something physiological in it, like an isotonic sports drink. But never sugar!
