I was going to work at the house today, but I got an email from the new boss asking if I'd mind moving to a new office today. She was hiring an assistant, starting tomorrow (for a while it will be a temp, but there will be an ad soon out to fill the job) and my area was right outside her door. She had said I could move to one of other cubbies (smaller) but the two in the office who made the final decision are the woman who was acting dean for months and the office manager - they knew I had way too much stuff for a cubby so put me in one of the two empty offices in the admin office. After 15 years it's nice to finally have a space with lots of shelves and a beautiful desk. No window any more, but it's a reasonable tradeoff. I'd been hinting for a while that it would be nice to get out of that open area. And I never liked working at the computer with my back to the traffic walking through - I was occasionally startled by people behind me, and it was always a distraction to be working there with everyone going to the copier and mail area nearby.
I moved everything out (it only took an hour or so because we knew this would be coming and I'd been recycling a lot of the extra back copies of newsletters for a while) and though it isn't all put away, it is all in the new space. I might be inspired to go into the office more to work there now! And it will be great to finally be able to put things so I can see where they are.
When I finished I dusted the old spot and set it up with a few pens, paper, stapler, tape, calendar (my old calendar thing that I never used). I did suggest a practical joke for when the real person arrives - conceal the computer (under the desk already) and set the one typewriter in the office in that spot. The others thought that would be very funny! :)
