One of the attractive things about the song was that it painted a picture but also allowed people to use their imaginations and "mentally fill in details" to the story. It may not be good poetry by academic standards, but, as far as I am concerned, it was a "great" song. If some people "missed" it and failed to see something appealing in it, then its their loss.
