Squirrels, on the other hand, do not eat ANY other living creature, but only dine on plant matter of various sorts such as seeds and nuts.

Seems to me that it is they who hold the higher moral ground here.

(Rats, on the other hand, will eat just about anything, given the chance...) But they're still cute and cuddly once you get to know them! Are you? I rest my case. ;-D
