The cold sore virus was used for one of the oddest bits of evolutionary detective work I know of. It's a descendant of the genital herpes virus.

Which explains why it's so prevalent in Cockermouth... :-)

As for its pervasiveness, as I understand it, about three-quarters of humanity harbours the cold sore virus. It doesn't mean you'll get cold sores.
