Hmmm, the glossary in my collection of Robert Burns' poems says that "fain" means "glad" or "fond" -- so maybe this should be "fa'n", which would be "fallen"? Or perhaps shoud be "facin'" or "fain o'" -- to mean "hoping for" (as in preference to the pain)... This is strange, and methinks we need a Scot!
