Not only the Carter Family, but many who sang their songs later on seemed to sing the words that Sarah sang, even though they made no sense"....the pale and the leader and eyes look like blue?"   

I will also admit to singing old blues and jug band songs that I don't really understand, but I just love the feel of the song.
