About a decade and a half ago, I ran the numbers on commuting costs vs real estate costs and was able to inform my realtor that it was worth $1,384 more in house price for each mile closer to work where she found me an acceptable house. (One thing I didn't include in the equations was my time on the road.)

Of course that was some time ago, with fairly significant differences in fuel prices and even greater differences in vehicle costs (call it depreciation and maintenance?. Mortgage interest rates now are also quite different.

Any recalculation would be significantly affected by location, but I'd wonder what the tradeoff would be now - if I still had to (or could) go to work every day.
