It sounds to me as if somebody's buying really cheap calendars.

All of the ones available at our (few remaining) book shops are "15 month" calendars as a minimum, usually with the last couple of months of the preceding year and the first quarter of the following one included.

They do omit the fancy pictures for the "extra" months, so maybe that implies everything will go back to black and white like in the old ancestral photos, but they do seem to suggest that things will go on in at least their usual bleak and miserable way.
