I've heard another different version but only remember two of the verses (banjo effect removed for clarity!):

I wish I was in Lancashire,
The place where I was born;
T'was there I played my yellow banjo,
Until my banjo broke.

I took it to the music shop,
The music shop was shut.
And that is why I sing this way,
Because my Banjo's broke.
