A punt was an Irish pound. At one point the english & irish pounds traded at parity (One pound = one punt)but the Irish went their own way, and the punt was no longer linked to the value of the pound.
Norther Ireland retained the English Pound. The South retained the punt (until they gave it up to join the Euro).
