While there are some things I believe are important enough to lay down one's life for, I don't think in most situations it would be efficient or effective to do so. Becoming a random martyr would be less efficient than, say, joining an underground resistance movement, depending on the situation. I know there have been situations in history where dying for a belief or a cause was extraordinarily powerful in changing the course of events for the good, but, I have to also say that they are not usually predictable or subject to planning. So the question is kind of full of holes, if you see my point.
