This is one of my favourite quotes from the left-wing English politician Tony Benn:

He wrote this many years ago and I think it could probably apply to both the US and the UK now. I can't comment specifically on Obama, Romney et al, because I don't know enough about the US political system - but I do know that though governments come and governments go, the social fabric and structures essentially seem to remain the same.

Or perhaps they don't, as we are now seeing the rich become richer and the poor become poorer...
