The "saving on ammunition" is a bit of a fuzzy thing, since a laser has to be "pumped up" before it can fire, and efficiency is pretty low. You probably need a pretty big generator and the fuel to run it, and on a smaller vessel that's likely to be about as much "baggage" as a few thousand rounds of more ordinary ammo. "Power lasers" mostly don't run off of AA batteries.
