You could retire to worse places than SF,NM. Of course, there's the scorpions, the sidewinders, the centipedes, the gila monsters, a lack of water, dust storms, the occasional blizzard, hostile natives, radiation left over from the '50s, NARPs, and similar things but don't let any of that discourage you.
