You'd be surprised at the amount of bug ID one can do with clear digital photos. I've been doing it for a number of years on the www.dirtdoctor.org site. It does take having a few clues - people write in from all over the US and the English speaking world, knowing where they are writing from, what type of plants are effected, soil type, temperatures, etc. But I'm not an etymologist (though I do have access to several on campus!)
