I spoke with the second in charge, she has been here three weeks. I had supporting documents that I handed her as I explained how this job came about and the troubles several directors have had in trying to get it audited and classified correctly. The point in the conversation where I think it sunk in for her - I told her I was finally asked to write the job description 18 months ago. I made notes and researched the best way to write it (in HR format, etc.) so that my skills fit in the position I was describing (this was the job description, not a resume) and I turned it in in April 2012, expecting an audit and pay raise finally - a few months later I was told that the new dean (not then hired) would want to put people in jobs so they would save it till then. In our Monday meeting I explained about writing it and turning it in - she said "but they held it because of this upcoming re-org" - like there was a reasonable cause for delay. "No - I turned it in last year, in April 2012." That shocked her, that a job that was so misaligned and underpaid had gone on so long, but that nothing had been done over a year ago.

I have heard from some here in new jobs that there are important personal points that got through in conversations with the dean - preferred job titles, etc. I am asking for a job title that preserves my access to the fair salary that should be paid, with the responsibility I've had for years. As you can expect, I'm very interested to see what the outcome is. I won't get back wages, but I would like to remedy the low salary into the future.
