Did you buy a third part cartridge, or is it Canon? Sometimes printers will not recognise the chip in a third party cartridge. Also the chip could well be corrupted.

how long ago did you buy the replacement cartridge? if it was recently, I would take it back with your receipt and see if you can do a switch.
