As I recall, the U.S. Constitution (paraphrased- not possible to look it up at the moment) sez that the State Legislatures are to set up the process & conditions by which the electors are selected. Sez nothing about the Legislature appointing them directly. Thought Repubs. were the advocates of literal reading of the Constitution without "interpreting" it---- unless its to their political advantage to do so, apparently.
