The family didn't want to make a race issue of it, probably knowing that, in that locality, it would be fruitless. In fact, it could have easily stirred up more racial troubles--in a community with a long history of racial troubles (See baseball player Jackie Robinson in relation to Sanford, Florida).

Would Zimmerman have acted the way he did if he had seen a white kid walking down the street with a bag of candy and a cup of iced tea? I doubt it very seriously.
