Actually, there was a good deal of sentiment at the time that the first three movements of the Ninth Symphony were brilliant, but the last movement (principally the choral setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy") was second-rate. It's interesting that the tune for this choral section has since become one of the best-known themes in classical music.
