Sweet little fat girl, slept in my bed,
Keeping me warm, keeping me fed,
Blushing and turning and shaking her head,
She saying be gentle and love me.
Old empty bottles rolled on the floor,
I drunk and reeling locked up the door,
Young and uncaring for what went before,

But love was out calling and just didn't know
That I was there falling with nowhere to go,
Down into freedom that took me so low,
Not gentle or able to love her.

Then she was crying, soundless and small.
I said, "Yes, tomorrow, well, maybe I'll call,"
But soon I was sleeping forgetting it all,

But love was out calling and just didn't know

Down into freedom that took me so low,
Not gentle or able to love her.
I woke in the morning and there through the wine,
I thought of the pain, hers for all time,
And I knew that I'd taken what never was mine,
