IMO:

Intelligence and invention fueled the Industrial and technical revolutions. The UK and USA benefited from both, as it controlled the companies who manufactured and distributed the technologies to the world.

Things have changed, these same companies, fueled by globalization and the search for cheap labour, have little allegiance to any nation.

Asian countries, especially those with talented citizens and a good work ethic, have benefited from this globalization and USA economic colonization - to the point that they now control (financially and otherwise) many former key western industries.

So, what is left for USA citizens? Without control/allegiance of the production-companies, the tools of intelligence and invention, a eroding work ethic, combined with high wage expectations, the future economic outlook remains questionable.

A "way out" for the USA is stressing "stellar" education to encourage the competative advantages of intelligence and invention for the next generation.
