Dan's clicky c.1915 Color Illustrated Children's Simple Simon - Frank Adams - Campbell Kid!
This paper cover childrens' book of nursery rhymes was published by the Charles E. Graham & Co. of Newark, N. J. & New York; it is undated and is labeled : "023 - Nursery Rhyme Series."   The front cover is illustrated with a wonderful picture of Simple Simon, a pieman and a puppeteer, with British illustrator Frank Adams' (1871-1944) signature in the lower left. This is the only illustration in the book with a recognizable signature, although the picture on the back cover (the 2nd illustration, above) and one of the color illustrations inside are probably his as well. Other color illustrations are unidentified, but look to me very similar to those of the Irishman John Frew (1875-1955) - see the second and third illustrations above. The black and white line drawings were either done by Philadelphia illustrator Grace Wiederseim Drayton (1877-1936) or someone copying her style. This artist invented the 'Campbell Kids' for the Campbell Soup Company in 1904 while she was married to advertising executive Theodore E. Wiederseim. Although her illustrations conjure up Campbell's Soup these days, she continued to use these children in other illustrations for post cards and childrens' books.

The book is 12 pages long and is 8"   wide x 10 5/8"   tall. Besides the pictures above, there are two more full-color illustrations and ten or so black and white line drawings.

The line drawings have all been crayoned, as in the fifth illustration above. The spine has been hand-mended with needle and thread; and the pages have become quite brittle over time, with chips missing around the edges and a few tears on one of the inner leaves.

This will be mailed in a rigid cardboard envelope, with an inner envelope to protect it in shipping. I ship anywhere in the world.

what a little treasure!
