Well certain players (Earl Scruggs for example) loved the skin head sound, so he went to a fibreskin, and seemed happy. I know what you mean about not wanting to mess with the sound you've got (I'm like that too) so extra instruments can be useful. However i know a lot of banjoists who've changed heads enough that they can pretty well customize the the results.
