Songwronger, normally you cite a source or post the link itself...this time you didn't, and though your post is pretty 'far out', nothing would surprise me anymore. Do you have a source? Firth posted Snopes, (one of the few rational things he's accomplished) which seems to dispel the story. Do you have another source, other than the one Snopes mentions.
I have no other thoughts on the matter, one way or the other.....even Ian Fleming got his ideas from 'somewhere'.
