I read of a Doctor who smoked and also had lung cancer. A fellow doctor was amazed when he found his colleague smoking while awaiting chemotherapy. I knew that I, as a smoker, would have been doing exactly as the smoking doctor was doing. When I realized that this was making sense to me, I decided to quit and did quit.

Thinking of all the completely irrational things that I had done as a smoker and knowing that I would be free to not make those decisions again was what gave me strength to quit a three pack a d habit of 36 years.
