Any attempt to play with just one other person - say at a singaround or session - will require some degree of harmonic commonality. Only last Sunday I was gently told off for playing a D chord at one point in the song "Spanish Ladies" - apparently it should have been a C. My ear told me otherwise, but I deferred to the person who started up his version of the song.
