Bert, it was about the same time that I saw my first black man. It was on a trolley-bus passing through Southall on our way to Ealing. The Woolf rubber factory had, I think, encouraged black men over to work there. I was quite small and delighted to see this man get on the bus. Unfortunately I shrieked out, "Mummy look! A chimney sweep is on our bus!" My mother nearly sank through the floor with utter shame, but I can still remember the gorgeous smile and dazzlingly white teeth of the chap, and hear his deep chuckle. And now I've been married for many years to a black man with just the same smile!
