I attend Folk clubs very regularly and often hear'own songs' 95% of which are dreadfully over long boring introspective dirges, that the writers SHOULD be ashamed to sing. But more often than not the singers, like yourself, are the most egotistical bores you can ever meet, usually getting on in years bitter and twisted that they've never been discovered (and never will be.
