My mother was working at Chatham College when the HUAC was hunting out communists. Faculty members were being asked to sign loyalty oaths, swear they weren't communists, and of course give the names of colleagues who were. Some of the faculty had come to this country from Europe, and seen that sort of thing before. It worried them.

Mom would speak of, "That ass Joe McCarthy" By ass she meant donkey. Not quite fair to donkeys.
