Both Gene Autry and John Wayne were 35 when Pearl Harbor was bombed.

The Service only took people up to 34.

Both tried to get in. Autry was an experienced pilot and won his appeal.

John Wayne was rejected a second time due to hearing problems and a leg injury he had suffered playing football for USC.

After doing his missions, Gene Autry was one of the Service's top PR men in recruiting.
