Thread Name: Intl Day of Remembrance: Consider the Legacy
Subject: Intl Day of Remembrance: Consider the Legacy
(mod pls fix thread title per subject line)

Yesterday (March 25) was International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery and TransAtlantic Slave Trade. It's been marked internationally for the last 7 years, so why is this not more widely known in the US? Mark your calendar and start planning now-- what role will you play next year? What songs will you sing? (Thanks Denise Johnson)

The Permanent Memorial to Honour the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the United Nations, entitled 'The Ark of Return,' was unveiled at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday. Engraved on the base of statue is this: "Consider the Legacy."

One legacy is that in the US, millions of white people continue to enjoy he benefits of the forced, unpaid labor of people we have been denied knowledge about (as far as the past), or relationship with now (as a result of the longstanding, wide barriers racism places between us), even when our interests are the same.

SEE THE STATUE, READ THE STORY
