Nigel, thank you for saying mum's letter was a joy to read. As you know she has over 200 that she wrote to my father in the war. They are all very beautifully written and certainly reflect the life of a 19 year old through to VE day when she was 22. I love hand written letters but they are very rare in these days of e mail and Face book. However I believe this thread reflects generosity and kindness of spirit thanks to Jane!

I often look at my mother's letters on the date in the month they were written, picking snowdrops in the woods, waving bombers off on their missions, precious leave taken back home in London, waiting and worrying for the precious blue airmail letters to arrive from my father. Some are really funny, the day she rode an old boneshaker RAF bicycle into the village ( first time on a bike) met a herd of sheep being driven up the hill. Mum had no idea how to brake so turned a swift left and landed up in a hedge, still upright and seated but most worried about the ladders in her stockings!

It comforts me to think of the feisty young Waaf when I watch the dear 91 year old who can no longer speak and is in a world of her own, so near and yet so far.

fondest love to all
