Maybe it's where we live. Where I live, it seems rare that the local media is not following a local case of a woman having been murdered by a man: woman missing, body found, suspect sought, man arrested, woman missing, body found .... etc. Cases of a member of a racial minority having been murdered by a white person do seem rare, though (no, I'm not going to look up the statistics).
