have spent the last week exploring the River Shannon, the great silver water that runs down through the center of Ireland. My means of exploration was a 30-foot barge-shaped cruising boat, purpose designed for rivers and canals, and the two of us were thrilled and delighted with every turn we took, from Athlone's Killinure Point north to Carrick, east to Lough Key and the strange castle that sits on an islet there, north to the beautiful village of Leitrim, and then south again through Rosskey, Tarmonbarry, Lanesborough and back across the wide Lough Ree to our home base at Quigley's Marina.
Then we spent two deliriously fine days traipsing across Dublin thanks to a dear friend who knows every turn of Irish history by heart. We took the light rail down to Sandycove, where--be still my heart!--we climbed the very steps of Joyce's Tower where stately plump Buck Mulligan once carried his shaving dish to intone the blessing of the sea over his morning ablutions.
In Athlone I had the rare treat of singing and playing for a grand gathering of spirited Irish folk in the oldest pub in Ireland, Sean's yclept, reputedly founded in 900 AD.
Here's to the Irish, God bless them high and low.
