Friday we wandered through the highs and lows of Dublin City to a wee fine old pub called The Cobblestone, and who should file into the pub while we were sipping porter there but the very man himself, Kevin Rowan, heir and master of the legacy of five generations of Uillean piping. His wife and two granddaughters and he set up with flute, half-pipes, fiddle and concertina and proceeded to light up the place with the finest of jigs, reels and hornpipes. Kevin Rowan one the Oirechatas Festival first place award in 1991, the same which is great great-uncle had one a hundred years before. Talk about the stream down the generations. Then in came an old granny, no relation, with a fine bodhran and she chimed in in perfect time with a wicked tipple. Then another young man with a guitar gently chimed in to support the magic. What an afternoon! If we hadn't been due to catch the train to Sandycove we would have stayed the day out just for the toe-tapping music.
