Did not Peter Bellamy approach Rudyard Kipling's ballads precisely because he made the connection between the poetry and several pre-existing tunes, and fit the two together? Didn't Bellamy say that only after matching poems to traditional melodies a few times, did he himself dare to take a Kipling lyric and compose an original setting?
