I grew up pronouncing 'the' (to rhyme with 'duh')except on the occasions when it preceded a vowel sound in which case it was pronounced as though it rhymed with 'dee'.

Now, increasingly, especially on the television, presenters are only using the 'duh' version. The result sounds quite awkward. Has there been a change in the way that English is taught?
