Vaughan Williams's dad was a vicar, in Down Ampney. RVW himself was an avowed atheist, yet he wrote one of the finest masses of the 20th century, the Mass in G minor for unaccompanied double chorus and soloists. In his words, "There is no reason why an atheist could not write a good mass."
