Actually, while I would have preferred a shot that explained why she was called "Titty", calling her "Tatty" is not so bad as changes go. Titty was called that after "Titty Mouse", and I expect "Tatty" would likewise have been named after "Tatty Mouse" from the same story. I have no idea why one would change the plot, though. What makes the story work is that it's almost completely about the children's own world.

In the Faraway Tree books, quite a few people seem to have been renamed somewhat.

Sailor's prayer's chorus is traditional; otherwise the song is Tom Lewis'.
