I suppose the same could be said for Pete Seeger. He barely had any voice left in the last decade of his life. But he still had lots of heart, and people loved to see him even if he wasn't able to sing very well any more.
Audiences and performers are the best judges of this. If audiences stop attending, performers will stop performing.
