Thread Name: W.B. Yeats (1865-1939)
Subject: W.B. Yeats
The great Irish poet W.B.Yeats died on this day January 29th 1939 in the south of France. His "remains" were brought back to Ireland in 1948 and re-interred in Drumcliff, Co Sligo. The inscription on his tombstone reads: "Cast a cold eye On Life, On Death. Horseman pass by." The reason I wrote "remains" is that recent research apparently casts some doubt as to whether the body in buried in Drumcliff is really that of Yeats. It is alleged that between 1939 and 1948, the knowledge of the real Yeats' grave was lost.
