Aside from the fact that it isn't just the press, let's look at how the press (and broadcast media) "twist" the news:

They decide which news to give us and which news to withhold.
They decide whether to have the news splattered all over the front page or to stick it on the bottom of page 17.
They decide how to comment on the news, if at all.
They decide how the news should be edited for consumption.
They decide to what extent the news should be sensationalised.
They decide on what kind of eye-catching headline to employ in order to draw you in.
The more scurrilous of them decide to embed comment and bias in articles (remember "enemies of the people?" "Gotcha!" And "Up yours, Galtieri?")

The press and broadcast media are intrinsically biased and selective. We get the press we deserve. Unless people treat the press with the scepticism it fully deserves and approaches it critically, they'll carry on getting away with lots. Almost four million people read the Mail every day. I have to conclude that they read it uncritically. They wouldn't buy it otherwise. I rest my case.
