Quite a number of songs use the expression "hard times", like (Hard times in the country,) DOWN ON PENNY'S FARM; (Hard times in the) WISE COUNTY JAIL; and another hard-times-in-jail song, that Pete Seeger recorded, whose name I disremember right now. Senior moment, I guess.
