Detestably, they both kept a family of servants (they called them "house-boys" even though they were grown men with wives and kids) who lived in shacks at the far ends of their huge gardens. They paid them a pittance, just enough to survive, but their justification was that these "chappies" would have been much worse off had it not been for my uncles' beneficence.
