In this case that means the abandonment or afforestation of areas previously used to encourage artificially high populations. As I said, grouse shooting has dramatically fallen in popularity. Overall numbers would have to plunge dramatically below 250,000 pairs, that is half a million birds, before it could be remotely described as endangered. Plenty of information available on all this.
