I am quite surprised that no one has mentioned the commercial fishing on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland that took place in pre-Columbian times. The Basques [and some say, Portugese] fishermen were providing cod to Europe for quite a while in that period. See Kurlanski's book, "Cod: A biography of the fish that changed the world," 1997.
